Name That Book

Rules and Regulations

Eligibility

·        Students in grades 3-6 may participate in the Elementary School Competition.

·        Six students will represent each school entered in the contest.

·        One student will serve as Captain.

·        One student may come as an official alternate; other students from the school may come to observe.

Name That Book Reading List

·        The official reading list of 35 books will be published on the Library Services Website and distributed to interested sponsors by the Department of Library Services.

·        Incidents and quotations from the books will be identified with the title of the book from which they came.  No authors’ names will be required.

Procedures

·        The announcer will read quotations and statements.

·        The quotation will be read one time only.  Quotations and correct answers will be displayed on a screen. Words from a title may be present in the quotation.

·        Each quotation will be addressed to all teams at the same time.

·        After the quotation, each school team will have 45 seconds to discuss the quotation and write the answer on a small dry erase board.  Anyone on the team may write the answer.  The team captains will stand when time is called, and display their team’s answer when requested.  No one will be allowed to write after time has been called or while standing.

·        No one will display his or her team’s answer until requested to do so.

·        The book title must be complete and exact, but minor spelling errors will not be penalized.

·        Teams will not be penalized for not writing the articles a, an or the at the beginning of a title.

·        Handwriting must be legible.

·        Each round will consist of five questions.

·        Any protest must be made at the end of each question, after each school has given its answer.  The team captain must raise the penalty flag; she or he will meet the team sponsor and discuss the protest.  The team captain may approach the judges, and three minutes will be allowed to resolve the protest.

·        In the case of a tie at the end of Round 5, additional questions will be asked until one of the tied teams misses a question.

Judges

·        Judges will arbitrate questions about answers, ties and protests.  Their decision is final. To register a protest, the team captain must raise the penalty flag at the end of each question, for that question only.  A team may only protest their own answer, not the answer of another team.

·        The judges may penalize teams for inappropriate behavior such as outbursts, disrespectful conduct, or unsportsmanlike conduct.

Awards

·        A trophy will be awarded to the winning school in each preliminary round, and to the first, second and third place winners in the finals.

·        The final round consists of the winning team from each preliminary round.

·        Certificates will be awarded to participants and sponsors in the preliminary and final competitions.
